About the Program

Public retirement systems offer management challenges far different than those found in either the private sector or other government settings. But training to fill this unique need is not readily available. To help meet this need, the CALAPRS Board of Directors is pleased to offer educational programs specifically tailored for managers and supervisors of California retirement systems.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on gatherings in California, the annual in-person CALAPRS Management/Leadership Academy program held in Pasadena, CA has been postponed until 2021. However, to continue CALAPRS’ mission of providing education for our members, we have arranged for online presentations of several unique management and leadership topics that are timely and relevant during these unprecedented times.

How to Lead a Virtual Team: Tips & Strategies for Working Remotely


It is our hope that those who attend the online program this year will be able to join us next year for the in-person program so that they can experience the full benefits of the traditional Management Academy, including important topic discussions and in-person networking.

Who Should Attend? 

These forums are designed for mid-level managers in larger systems and supervisors in smaller systems. The ideal candidate is a retirement system subordinate manager or supervisor with a couple of years of experience leading a team in benefits, accounting, investments or administrative aspects of your public retirement system.

How to Participate – The Virtual Platform

The program will be held using the Zoom Meeting platform and attendees will need to participate using their computer or mobile tablet in order to access the visual portion of the sessions. Audio may be accessed by dialing in by phone or through computer audio using the Zoom platform. Detailed access instructions will be sent to each participant upon registration. 

CALAPRS plans to make this course interactive and allow attendees the option to enable their audio and video and participate actively in the discussion, as facilitated by the moderators. In addition, a chat box will be available for attendees to communicate in writing.  



Registration is open to staff from CALAPRS member retirement systems. The Management / Leadership Forums will be limited to a total of 30 participants and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.* 

Participants should plan to attend the full program series (all 5 sessions). A single registration should not be shared between multiple individuals without prior approval from CALAPRS.

Pricing for the full program is $500 per person and must be paid in advance. Registration is non-refundable after the start of the first session.
